Position Summary

The Civil Structural Engineer is responsible for providing engineering design, analysis, and support for utility-scale power projects, including substations, transmission, distribution, and renewable energy facilities. This role involves designing structural systems, foundations, and site layouts that meet technical, safety, and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate has strong technical knowledge of civil/structural engineering in the power and utilities sector, experience with applicable codes and standards, and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, cost-effective, and reliable solutions.

 

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design

• • Perform structural analysis and design of foundations, steel structures, concrete, and equipment supports for substations, transmission lines, and related facilities.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical reports.
  • Conduct site grading, drainage, stormwater management, and erosion control design.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes (ASCE, AISC, ACI, NESC, local building codes).
  • Review and stamp engineering drawings (PE required, or working toward licensure).

Project Support & Collaboration

• • Provide civil/structural engineering support throughout all project phases: feasibility, design, permitting, procurement, and construction.
  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and project management teams to ensure seamless coordination of designs.
  • Support proposal development, cost estimation, and schedule planning for civil/structural scope of work.
  • Review vendor and contractor submittals for compliance with project specifications.

Field Support & Quality Assurance

• • Conduct site visits, inspections, and field assessments to support construction and resolve issues.
  • Provide technical guidance and troubleshooting for construction teams.
  • Ensure quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) processes are applied to civil/structural deliverables.

Compliance & Safety

• • Ensure all designs and construction activities meet federal, state, and local regulations, as well as client specifications.
  • Incorporate safety, reliability, and sustainability into all engineering practices.
  • Support environmental permitting and compliance efforts where civil/structural work is involved.

 

Required Qualifications

• • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 5 - 10+ years of civil/structural engineering experience in the Power/Utility industry (substations, transmission, renewable energy, or industrial facilities).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (able to sign off on drawings)
  • Proficiency with engineering software such as STAAD Pro, RISA, SAP2000, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of industry codes and standards (ASCE, ACI, AISC, NESC, IEEE).
  • Excellent problem-solving, technical writing, and communication skills.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

The Senior Substation Engineer is responsible for leading the engineering, design, and technical execution of high-voltage substation projects for utility clients. This role supports greenfield and brownfield substation projects, including physical design, protection and control coordination, equipment specifications, technical reviews, construction support, and compliance with applicable utility standards and industry codes. The ideal candidate brings strong power delivery experience, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to mentor junior staff while serving as a technical point of contact for clients, internal teams, vendors, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and perform substation engineering and design for utility transmission and distribution projects, including voltage classes typically ranging from 13.8 kV through 500 kV.
• Develop, review, and approve substation physical design deliverables, including general arrangements, one-line diagrams, grounding plans, conduit and cable routing plans, equipment layouts, elevations, sections, details, and bills of material.
• Prepare and review technical specifications for major substation equipment, including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, instrument transformers, bus systems, surge arresters, relay panels, control buildings, and auxiliary systems.
• Perform and review engineering calculations such as grounding studies, lightning protection, conduit fill, cable sizing, voltage drop, station service, AC/DC load calculations, and equipment ratings.
• Coordinate closely with protection and control, civil, structural, transmission line, SCADA, telecom, project management, procurement, and construction teams to ensure integrated and constructible designs.
• Support protection and control design coordination, including relay panel layouts, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay settings coordination, and interface requirements.
• Ensure engineering deliverables comply with client standards, utility practices, applicable codes, and industry standards such as IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, NFPA, and NERC requirements where applicable.
• Provide technical leadership during project planning, design reviews, constructability reviews, outage planning, commissioning, and field issue resolution.
• Review vendor drawings, contractor submittals, equipment data, test reports, and construction documentation for technical accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
• Respond to RFIs, support site visits, resolve field conflicts, and provide engineering support during construction, testing, energization, and closeout.
• Prepare engineering scopes of work, design criteria, project schedules, estimates, technical proposals, and level-of-effort assumptions for utility projects.
• Mentor junior engineers and designers by reviewing work products, providing technical guidance, and promoting quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program; power systems emphasis preferred.
• Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in substation engineering, utility power delivery, or high-voltage electrical infrastructure design.
• Demonstrated experience developing substation physical design packages for utility clients.
• Strong knowledge of substation equipment, configurations, clearances, grounding, bus arrangements, station service, control buildings, and constructability requirements.
• Familiarity with applicable codes and standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, NFPA, and utility-specific design standards.

The Designer/Drafter is responsible for preparing detailed electrical and structural drawings, schematics, and layouts to support engineering and field service projects. This role translates conceptual designs and technical information into accurate CAD drawings and models that comply with industry standards, client specifications, and company procedures. The Designer/Drafter works closely with engineers, project managers, and field teams to ensure drawings are clear, accurate, and practical for installation and construction.

Key Responsibilities

• • Develop and revise CAD drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and one-line diagrams for electrical power systems projects.
  • Prepare substation layouts, panel layouts, conduit/cable schedules, grounding plans, and related design documents.

We are seeking a versatile and knowledgeable Technical Consultant to act as a key subject matter expert within our Proposal Department. This role involves analyzing client requests, developing detailed work scopes, and writing the technical content that forms the foundation of our proposals. 

You will be the vital link between the client's technical specifications and our proposal, sales and operations teams, ensuring our bids are accurate, compliant, and clearly communicate our value. 

Key Responsibilities 

• RFP Analysis: Systematically review client Request for Proposals (RFPs), technical specifications, and electrical drawings (one-line diagrams, schematics) to determine the full scope of required services. 

• Scope Development: Define the precise testing, maintenance, or engineering tasks required to meet the client's needs, referencing relevant US standards and regulations (NFPA, ANSI/NETA, IEEE, FERC/NERC). 

• Technical Writing: Author clear, accurate, and persuasive technical narratives, scope-of-work (SOW) summaries, and compliance matrices for inclusion in the final proposal. 

• Estimation Support: Collaborate with the engineering team and the operation team to provide technical input on labor hours, required test equipment, and potential project challenges. 

• Risk Identification: Identify technical risks, ambiguities, or deviations from the client's request and help formulate the necessary assumptions or exceptions. 

• Collaboration: Work closely with the sales team to understand the client's objectives and with the operations/engineering teams to confirm our capabilities and solution. 

 

Qualifications and Skills 

Required:

• 3-5+ years of experience in the electrical power system industry, with hands-on field services and engineering services. 

• Technical Expertise: Direct experience in one or more of the following:

• P&C: Testing or troubleshooting protective relays, control systems, and SCADA.
